WHIM PRODUCTIONS is now accepting submissions for the
5th annual "alphabet soup" lgbtqIA short play festival
Every year in April, Whim Productions produces the Alphabet Soup: Stories from Queer Voices short play festival.
We invite LGBTQIA playwrights living in the Greater Kansas City area to submit works for consideration to be in the festival.
The ideal plays will share day-to-day moments of queer life - whatever that means to you, in whatever genre. There are no restrictions on tone or subject: They can be campy, naughty, serious, topical, scary, or even scifi. The only requirement is that the plays feature one or more members of the LGBTQIA community as an integral part of the plot.
Submissions are due September 15, 2019
Playwrights must identify as a member of the LGBTQIA community and live in the Greater Kansas City area, or be able to attend workshops in Kansas City.
Plays will be workshopped as a group by the selected playwrights. We ask that the selected playwrights commit to attending at least two private workshops to support the other writers.
Ideal scripts will be no longer than 15 pages, or read no longer than 10 minutes. No full-length plays or one acts. We’re also not accepting submissions of musicals. Plays of slightly longer length may be considered.
There should be 4 characters or less. At least one character must be part of the LGBTQ+ community.
Plays longer than requested or that do not meet the production theme or submitted without synopsis will not be read.
Keep in mind that shows are produced on a small budget, so elaborate sets, scene changes, costumes, or excessive props will greatly affect chances of getting produced.
The Submission Requirements:
In the body of the email, include the title of the piece, name of playwright, mailing address, email address, and phone number.
The play itself must not have any identifying information about the playwright.
Please include the title of the play and page numbers on every page of the script.
No more than two plays per playwright.
Selected playwrights must agree to participate in a series of private workshops with the other selected playwrights. During the period, playwrights are expected to participate in critiques and feedback sessions, and make revisions to their scripts as a result of the feedback.
Selected playwrights will be notified by November 15th.
Fees / Stipend: There is no submission fee. Selected playwrights will receive a small stipend.
Using Alphabet Soup Submission as the subject line, please submit a PDF version of your play to email@example.com. You can also send any questions to the same address.
